Nairobi National Park Black Rhino: Kenya’s Best Urban Rhino Sanctuary
How Many Black Rhinos Are in Nairobi National Park?
Nairobi National Park is home to approximately 50 black rhinos — one of the highest-density black rhino populations in East Africa and a critical component of Kenya’s national rhino recovery programme. Despite being the world’s only urban national park of significant size, Nairobi NP has maintained and grown its black rhino population through intensive KWS protection, making it one of the best places in Kenya to see these critically endangered animals.
Nairobi NP’s Role in Kenya’s Rhino Recovery
Kenya’s black rhino population was decimated by poaching in the 1970s and 1980s — falling from approximately 20,000 animals in the 1970s to fewer than 300 by 1986. A national recovery programme involving intensive anti-poaching, rhino sanctuaries, and translocations has rebuilt the population to approximately 900 black rhinos as of 2024. Nairobi National Park serves as a key breeding sanctuary and “rhino bank” — animals bred here are periodically translocated to other Kenyan parks and conservancies to strengthen populations elsewhere.
The Nairobi Safari Walk and Animal Orphanage
Adjacent to Nairobi National Park’s main gate, the Nairobi Safari Walk provides guaranteed close-range views of black and white rhino in large naturalistic enclosures — ideal for visitors who want a certain rhino encounter before or after a park game drive. The KWS Animal Orphanage next door rehabilitates orphaned and injured wildlife including rhinos, lion, cheetah, and other species. Both are recommended additions to any Nairobi NP visit.
Sighting Probability in the Park
Black rhino in Nairobi NP are more challenging to find than at the Ngorongoro Crater or Ol Pejeta Conservancy — the park’s 117 km² of bush provides significant cover. Sighting probability during a full-day game drive with an experienced KWS guide is approximately 40–60%. Early morning (06:00–09:00) in the open grasslands near the Athi River area produces the most consistent sightings, as rhinos are more active in the cool morning hours.
