How to Get to Nairobi National Park: Location, Gates and Access

Where Is Nairobi National Park and How Do You Get There?

Nairobi National Park’s main gate is just 7 km from Nairobi city centre on Langata Road — approximately 20–30 minutes by road from most Nairobi hotels depending on traffic. The park’s proximity to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) — just 5 km away — makes it uniquely accessible for travellers transiting through Nairobi, who can fit a half-day game drive between international connections.

Gates and Entry Points

  • KWS Main Gate (Langata Road): The primary entrance. On Langata Road, accessible from Karen, Langata, and the city centre. GPS: approximately -1.3667, 36.8293. Open daily from 06:00 to 18:00.
  • East Gate: Near Jomo Kenyatta International Airport — useful for airport transfers and for visitors staying in Eastleigh or the east side of Nairobi
  • Banda Gate: Southern entrance, near the open boundary area. Less commonly used.

When to Visit (Time of Day)

Early morning (gate opens 06:00) is the most productive time for wildlife viewing — lion and cheetah are active, and the light is excellent for photography. The park becomes noticeably busier after 09:00 on weekends. Midweek mornings offer the best combination of wildlife activity and fewer vehicles. The park closes at 18:00; all vehicles must be out by sunset.
